The programme »The successful integration of immigrant children« includes direct educational activities for immigrant children, who need to be or are already included in the Slovenian educational system and the training of professional staff of educational institutions. It will be carried out from November 2013 to August 2015, within the network of 65 primary and high schools participating in this project.

Learning Slovene with different learning and didactical materials and also through practical workshops based on daily life (at the fishmongers, clothes shop, bakery, at the post office, in the museum, visiting the farm, in the city library, etc.).

 

 

Learning support in learning Slovene language to achieve greater communication capabilities and learning assistance in other subjects to overcome the differences in school systems and educational programmes between the home country and Slovenia.

Activities for learning mother tongue Pupils learn their mother tongue in and outside school by reading literature in their mother tongue, via Internet connections with schools from the place of their origin, with the assistance and cooperation of various migrant associations in the local community.

 

Learning Italian and Hungarian in nationally mixed areas Children have learning support in Italian or Hungarian in the school and the local environment (society, local community, etc.).

 

Individual programme, activities plan and immigrant’s personal folder of achievements Children and parents participate in the preparation of an individual activity plan, keep the personal folder of achievements, recording and monitoring the progress.

 

The integration of children in extracurricular and other activities in and outside school Support and guidance in the extracurricular activities in the school and outside it, to learn about the environment, learn the language and develop communication abilities. A child attends morning stay and after school stay for faster integration in the linguistic and social areas.

 

»Strengthening families« – activities for parents and children A variety of activities to strengthen and protect immigrants’ families:

–        promotion of cooperation between the immigrants’ families and families of other children from school, through the strengthening of social networks (learn about the habits, customs, cuisine, language learning, etc. ),

–        development of multiculturalism, socializing in different workshops with thematic content such as: Apples are colourful, Sparkles in the eyes, Birds sing and In a summer day, etc.),

–        help and support for parents and children in order to facilitate more effective integration into closer and wider society (preparation of different roles, etc.).

»School for mothers« Thematic workshops for immigrants’ mothers or legal guardians to obtain the communication skills and their integration and the integration of children and families in the local community and the wider society.

Slovenian language courses for parents to learn Slovene for everyday use.

 

Slovenian language courses for children with different mother tongue We organize a Slovenian language course for children already included into Slovenian educational system but with different mother tongue origin before the school year starts.

 

Peer assistance, tutoring and volunteering in school and local community Pupils and volunteers from different local associations and organizations help and assist the integration of immigrant children into the new environment as “translators”; they provide assistance in learning and writing homework after school.

 

Teacher as »confidant« He’s the child’s support in the integration process, the bond between the child and the rest of the teachers in school, in different associations, non-governmental and governmental organizations in the local environment that offer and can provide support programmes for inclusion in the new environment for immigrant children and their families.

 

Competition in creative writing »Diversity makes us richer« Pupils of elementary schools in Slovenia will be invited to participate in this competition. The exhibition of selected works will take part in the final conference of the project, it will be shown on the project’s websites and in schools and local communities. The competition and its messages will be presented also in the media

 

Holidays and other opportunities within the local community »Friendship – join us«

 

During the holidays and during the school year a variety of activities are organized (sports, cultural, creative activities, individual and collective forms of learning support), in which, at the same time, pupils and students of elementary and secondary schools are involved together with their teachers and professors as well as the volunteers.

Workshop »Teaching Slovene as a second language« Multipliers and teachers of the participating schools present the specifics in teaching Slovene as a second language and encourage all professional workers to care and support immigrants in learning it. Multipliers also introduce different didactical materials for greater ability in speaking, reading, writing and listening comprehension.

»Didactic techniques and educational adjustments – preparing an individual programme«

Multipliers present guidelines for didactic techniques and educational adjustments for teachers working with immigrant pupils.

Taking into account the child’s individual capabilities and needs, teachers who work with immigrants collaborate with the multiplier in preparation of an individual programme that monitors the child’s progress in learning and socializing (integration in class, school, and local community). The individual programme covers didactic techniques and methods, adjustments in evaluation, goals and standards to be achieved.

 

Activities with local community

»Local community helps in successful integration of immigrant pupils and their parents«

Multipliers present options, chances and support for professional staff in the activities of faster inclusion and integration of immigrants and their families in a new environment through cooperation with universities, immigrants and minority associations, governmental and non-governmental organizations, volunteers at the level of the local community.

 

Regional professional training for professional staff  for the programme’s implementation

 

Multipliers in collaboration with the professional coordinator and other experts carry out a one-day (8 hours) regional training courses for primary and secondary school teachers in each region. In addition to schools already included into the network of participating schools, other schools and educational institutions are invited to take part in the training and are informed about the programme and ways of its implementation in their own organizations (the expansion of the network of schools).

The regional trainings present the contents specific to each region (e. g., teaching Italian and Hungarian in the national mixed areas).

 

There are 11 regional training courses planned. Professional workers of schools that are not directly involved in the project through the Ministry of education network (in the Pomurska region and the Zasavska region) will be also invited.
